Best Buddies is a national charitable organization that is dedicated to enhancing our community through one-to-one friendships between individuals who have an intellectual disability and students. Community Living North Bay has formed a partnership with Best Buddies and established a North Bay chapter with students from Nipissing University and Canadore College.
Best Buddies is grounded in the belief that friendship is important to the development of all individuals and that for individuals who have an intellectual disability, friendship is a medium through which they can integrate more fully into their communities. Best Buddies gives people the chance to have experiences which most people take for granted – going for coffee, out to a movie, talking on the phone, or simply enjoying the company of a good friend. Warm up to Winter Concert
This year Best Buddies NUSU got the privilege to attend the Warm up to Winter Concert that was hosted by Nipissing Kiwanis Circle K Club featuring the NU Eddie Band.
The turn out was around 30 peers and buddies, who all met at the front of Nipissing and headed to the Nipissing auditorium together for the concert. In terms of admissions for the concert, in the spirit of holiday giving, the K Club asked that we each bring a non- perishable food bank item, gently used article of winter clothing or a silver collection (a Lonnie or a Twoonie). The NU Eddie Band was awesome, the buddies and peers really enjoyed their time together at the concert.
We would like to thank the Nipissing Kiwanis Circle K Club and the NU Eddie Band for the wonderful night! Thank you also to Community Living for always making these events possible for us! We are looking forward to our next event together.
Best Buddies Dance Event
Buddies arrived at 5:30pm to discuss how their year was going with Best Buddies so far. They shared their ideas of what they thought about the Best Buddies program along with putting forth some great ideas for up coming events. The rest of the peer buddies arrived at 6 pm and our fun filled night began! Once everyone arrived we played some games together as a group.
There were many different stations that were set up around the room such as a dancing section where buddies and their peers got to dance together along with many different games spread across tables around the room. Some of the games included monopoly, various card games, checkers, puzzles, BINGO, along with many others.
The night was filled with fun and laughter as buddies and their peers enjoyed each other’s company. Thank you to everyone that came out to our first event of the New Year. Also a big thank you to Community Living for making these events happen! We are looking forward to a great rest of the year! See everyone at our next event.

Best Buddies Meet & Greet: Oct 21, 2016
On Friday October 21st, 2016 we had our annual NUSU/CSRC Best Buddies Meet and Greet at Nipissing University, with a great turn out of over 60 people. This years theme was Halloween requiring everyone to come dressed his or her best costume.
We first played an icebreaker game allowing everyone to become familiar with each other and to start to learn everyone’s names. In order to find our matches we had to play a matching game to find the person who had the same Halloween sticker on their back as they did. Once the buddies were paired together they had time to socialize and sign their ‘Friendship Contract’. Then it was back to the games! There were stations with different games including, ring toss, bowling with a pumpkin, knocking toilet paper towers over with Halloween balls, and pin the face on the pumpkin. We also held competitions that the buddies took part in such as who could wrap a person the best in toilet paper to look like a mummy.
At the end of the meet and greet we held a best costume contest. We had three lucky winners congratulations to Collin Robertson, Marcel Martel, Rosalee Cote and an honorable mention to Eric Kirkey, you guys looked great! We would like to thank everyone would came out to this event along with Community Living for your help and support in making our night ‘Spooktacular’! We are looking forward to our next event together on November 4th, 2016!
It is with great sadness that we share the news of Brook’s passing. Brook was a long-time Buddie and an outstanding young person.

Santa Claus Parade – November 22-23, 2014
On Saturday, November 22nd, 2014 the Nipissing University/Canadore College Best Buddies Chapter began a busy weekend of preparing for and participating in the Annual Santa Claus Parade. This weekend of fun began with decorating the “12 Days of Christmas” themed float. It was a great turn out for setting up the float with several people helping design and create a Christmas tree, gifts, and representations of each of the 12 days of Christmas. Community Living North Bay kindly offered their building, FJ Dellandrea for us to use to decorate our float and provided our hard workers with hot chocolate and coffee. It was a productive day with the float coming to completion after a few hours and looking very festive. Sunday, November 23rd was the day of the parade and had everyone getting into the holiday spirit as they awaited the start of the Parade. There was another good turn out of Best Buddies’ members who came to participate in the annual event. There was a lot of singing, waving and cheering as we walked downtown with smiles on our faces. The weather was nice, our float was beautiful and everyone was overjoyed with festive cheer. The weekend was busy, but it was fun filled and a great way to start the holiday season!
Fun Friday – November 7, 2014
What a great Fun Friday!
This past Friday, our great group of buddies got together to work on a project for the community: making tie blankets for the animals at the North Bay Humane Society. It was great to see everyone working together, laughing, chatting, and getting to know one another whether their buddy match was present or not. Alexa, a Humane Society officer, joined us for our event. She explained where our blankets were going and gave us some important tips on caring for our pets! Everyone was excited to tell her about the pets they have or had growing up and asking questions. It was also a great treat to have our past president Haleigh Wiggins join us for the night! A special thanks to Jo Ann Wilson from Community Living for supplying us with all the fun material.
Meet and Greet October 2014
Best Buddies Meet and Greet – Oct 2014
On Friday, October 31st, 2014 we had our annual NUSU/CSRC Best Buddies Meet and Greet at Nipissing University. The theme for this Meet and Greet was Halloween, and with such a great turn out for our first event, the room was filled with great costumes. With great anticipation and excitement, buddy pairs participated in icebreaker games and then proceeded to find their match by literally finding the person with the matching Halloween symbol! They were given time to chat and socialize over the many delicious Halloween treats, and then once again were busy with different activities. We had a photo wall station where buddy pairs could get their picture beside a skeleton or play pin-the-bowtie on the skeleton. Another station was marshmallow structures, where people worked together to create extravagant haunted houses. Lastly, but not least there was a spider web game where everyone took turns throwing Styrofoam balls onto a tape spider web in an attempt to make the balls stick. The night was very hectic, which was expected with the largest number of buddies registered for Best Buddies in years, but the night was filled with a lot of laughter and fun also. This was a great start to another great year!

On Saturday, March 1st, 2014 the Nipissing University/Canadore College Best Buddies Chapter hosted their 4th Annual Friendship Tournament at the Elks Lodge. March is Best Buddies month. Fun activities began the month where people from the community and school came together. The day began with the Spirit Station. 8 teams created their own team poster/banner that they would carry around with them throughout the day, displaying the name of their team.
Main activities of the day included: Jeopardy, Minute to Win It, Relay Race, Bean bag Toss, Newspaper Fashion Show, Name That Tune and I Spy Rice. With each activity, teams competed against each other to gain points that would be used to determine winners of the tournament. They also gained points for their sportsmanship. There was a lot of cheering and new friendships that formed. A spot dance show cased some of the best dance moves.
With a morning full of fun and games, the afternoon activities proved to be just as entertaining and enjoyable. At the end of the day, teams were given some time to work on a final team cheer for the cheer-off. They presented their cheer and dance routines to a panel of judges who chose a favorite for the crowning of a winner in this event. The day finished with the announcing of the top 3 teams.
Best Buddies month began with a great start as we celebrated what friendship is all about through this day of fun!
Meet and Greet – October 2013
Skate and Improv 2013
Best Buddies meet and greet was a “howling success”
Buddies attended Nipissing University for an evening of fun and treats at the Halloween event. Buddies matches were able to spend time getting to know each other. All participated in get to know you games, Halloween trivia and minute to win it games. Buddies had great fun trying to get an Oreo cookie from your forehead to your mouth without using your hands.
What a great way to reconnect for some and begin new friendships for all!
Winners: Scariest Costume, Peter Washington, Most Creative, Madison Wagner, Best Disney Costume Morgyn Graham and Sam Therrien
The Best Buddies worked very hard at work shops to plan and create decorations for the Christmas float. Hot chocolate and cookies fueled the Buddies as they cut out designs, painted, and sang their way to the Santa Parade 2012.
